We parked all the cars within about a 15 minute hike-up from one of the many tracks on the mountain. Unfortunately we had neglected to leave a car or two by the landing field for the retrieve but we were too excited with the prospect of flying and collectively forgot.
The site is called Knockanaffrin and it is in The Comeraghs. It is about 700m high, takes a NE wind direction, has a large forested area and two small loughs. Lough Mohra and Coumduala lough.
This is the first time that I have been to this mountain and I thought that it was stunning, amazing views of the surrounding countryside and interesting rock formations and cliff faces.
There were other pilots on the hill who were not flying in the competition and as conditions were light most stayed on the hill for a while, looking for more favourable wind conditions.
There were a few HG pilots hoping for a flight and a HG competition but conditions were deemed too light and that ended their hopes to fly.
Eight PG pilots entered the competition:
Co-ordinates were entered into our gps's and after our hill side briefing we launched and waited in the air for the competition window to open. The wind was very light and we had some trouble staying up but hopping from thermal to thermal and using whatever ridge lift we could find we waited for the radio message to start.
Once the competition window was announced open, Big Mark and Dorin managed to get a long way down the ridge closer to our C1 coordinate. We had to get to within a 100m wide cylinder of the pre planned co-ords before we could move on to the next co-ordinate on our list.
After some considerable time I managed to get to the first waypoint while Dorin and Marek were on their second visit to that waypoint at Coumduala Lough about 4km from launch.
At this stage of the competition 4 of our pilots had bombed out so it was now a four horse race.
Big Mark finished in first place with Dorin not far behind.
Tom completed the tasks before me and then it was my turn.
I made it to the final cylinder over the landing field with height to spare so I tried to get back as close to the car as possible. I landed on the slope and from the air it looked like an easy hike from where I landed to the parked car. Perspective is a strange thing and it was a lot harder in reality to make it to the car. After much cursing and sweating and a lot more time than I thought I got to the car.
Our first competition of 2011 was really cool with the weather cooperating, giving us some powerful sunshine and it reminded me of my first Xc which was not that long ago and only to Myshal from the mast.
It was really nice to be free flying with like minded people :)
The cumulative distance of the tasks was about 15Km and I cant wait till the next one.
Here's a video I took on the day which shows some of the pilots in the comp, the scenery and the two lakes.
Hope to see more pilots in the air competing in the next competition.

Nice one Gerry !
Like the presentation and most of all like the movie , was interesting to see myself flying as after min 8 , I’m on the movie in front of you all the time !
I want to share as well my experience about the first competition of the year!
Gerry did a good job describing the site , so ...i skip that !
Light meteo condition , and as we waiting getting better we had the briefing , talk about the route , set the points !I put the points in my Competino , move it in the competition route , set the time for the window , set cylinder for the start 100 m (as Tom express it )!Tom didn't said anything about the other points and I didn't think to ask about the cylinder for the other points , i just let it 400 m as it was usual for the other routes that i have it before in My GPS ! Omission that was so important, keep these in mind and you'll understand why!
Now that the route was sorted, plenty of time before the window opens , sorting the gear , no rush about ! After a while, few pilots took off , and bomb out !Lots of time to come back and do it again !
When i was ready for going, i set and start looking at my options! Thermals start having a cycle, 6 min between , week though , even when they came wasn't much ! at the right of the ridge i feel that will be more for sure , to get there that would be tricky , cause i will be low to a passage between the rocks and the trees , passage just few meters, a landing there HMMMM , not good ! Not many options , to stay up NEED TO GET ON THAT RIDGE , so start visualizing the way , how much i will lose on the way , the height that i could get with a week lift ,meters lost using speed bar ... the result in my mind was " achievable but tight “ !
Now was the time to have patience , waiting for a good lift that can get me to pass that one …after a while that lift came , I feel the GO ,so inflate , all good ,turn , and I was going as it was already in my mind , tight enough as I was under the top line of the trees on the left and big rocks on the right …under just few meters to play with ! take me a lot of energy those few second , after that I was safe , having lots of fun on the ridge . After a while i start looking for the route , flying a part of it !
I new that these will be a speed run on the ridge , so no time to stay , I said you need just the lift to keep you safe , the rest RUN as quick you can !
The windows almost open ,conditions gets better , geting close to the first point , and when Tom declare it open ,Big Mark and me we took the point straight away , turn and go for the next ! He had different strategies on the run and above Lough Mohra we arrive on the same time , but he was with arprox. 30 m high then me . After Lough Mohra it was the turn following the ridge but I didn’t know what’s there cause we couldn’t see it . When I turn there I realize that I need more height , I turn back , get few meters , but I said you need to go , cause otherwise you will not catch him ! So …I go on the run …. At these moment Big Mark was already a good bit ahead and a good bit higher ! Full speed bar required , lots of concentration cause I had just few meters above the trees , squeeze every small lift on the way ! I saw a ridge facing the wind , and I new that’s the place with the lift , that was my target .
I catch Mark and as the ridge approaches I start getting altitude , and just before the point I end up in front of him and even with few meters higher . That was a moment , so exciting ! I get the point Coumduala lough , turn and go back ….now I new all the route , and I new that I could win , just something stupid would stop me ! After that was easy , Run , get small lift when I feel I need , get the second time the first point and turn back . At these time the guys just start the first run , so just Mark was a threat for me , but he was a good bit behind now ! >From these moment you see me on Gerry’s movie , around after minute 8 ! At these moment I had comfortable distance to win ! I get the Coumduala lough again turn and go finish .
Now gets interesting , cause Tom see me turning and he told me that point it’s far ( the talk it’s on Gerry’s movie ) .I knew that I get the point cause Competino when enter the cylinder marked 5 points , straight away and you get a special sound for , so was …no mistake about !
As Tom ask me on the radio about the radius of my cylinder , it was like a flash for me .
I DIDN’T SET THE RADIUS 100 M FOR THE OTHER POINTS , for these one was 400 m , so I suppose to go another 300 m to get it ! So technically I didn’t touch these point , even that I was there !
That was the moment when I give up the race , I was disappointed , I must admit , cause the race was in my hands and these mistake cost me ! I give up then , and after Lough Mohra I went on the valley , playing with lower thermals , it was a way to clear my mind , cause these keep me busy to focus on getting the thermals …so I played another 30 min , being low getting a bit of training ! After that was going to land , and that was my day of flying !
I was happy to fly on the air with many pilots , which not happened often , I enjoy the race a lot , cause was fun , challenging !
At a bear after the meeting , I had a bear and a chat with Big Mark , we congratulate each other for the challenge !!!
Was a good time there , I hope that next time more pilots will join the competition , cause it’s a nice way of being together and it’s fun !!!
That was my experience …and for sure I will go for a video camera … it’s an interesting way to fly after landing , analyzing the flight !
As I usually say : Fly High In LIFE …in HEART !
